Behind the Facade - Lecture 1 - Bernini and Borromini : The rivalry which transformed Rome.
Francesco Borromini, the melancholic loner, crafted intricate architectural gems which are now considered the masterpieces of Baroque architecture. However he was constantly overlooked in favour of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the charismatic ladies’ man, who excelled in every artistic field from poetry to sculpture, architecture and town planning and who appropriated Borromini’s ideas and expertise. When the Popes of the Baroque era hired them both to redesign Saint Peter’s, their rivalry would threaten the most important church in Christendom. One would commit suicide, while the other would have a fortune and every possible honour showered on him. This lecture was recorded on 20 March 2015.
