■ There's always flounder by Yeongdeok! – Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Before the peak snow crab season begins, two women bustle against the backdrop of the azure sea. They are Kim Gap-chul (77), born and raised in Yeongdeok, and his sister-in-law, Kim Young-ok (54). Their busy schedule is to dry flounder, a staple on the tables of Yeongdeok's common people. While flounder can be found in the Yeongdeok sea all year round, it's said to be especially delicious now, when it's plump and plump. This plump, dried flounder is perfect for "Gajamisikhae." In the old days, when rice was scarce, it was made with millet. Millet-flour flounder sikhae has now become a delicacy. Actor Choi Soo-jong, who ate flounder sikhae daily as a child, is transported back to those days with a single slice of Gap-chul's flounder sikhae. Another treasure of Yeongdeok's sea is Haebangpungnamul (Korean pancakes). Growing on the sandy beaches, it paints the sandy shores with vibrant green. It's said to be exquisite when paired with flatfish in a spicy marinade. Discover the autumn flatfish feast, a gift from the Yeongdeok sea. ■ Patterned Squid on Yeongdeok's Autumn Sea – Yeonghae-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do At the same time everyone is heading home, a boat leaves the dock. It's heading out to sea to catch patterned squid! Patterned squid, a rising treasure of Yeongdeok that has been appearing in the East Sea for several years. Three times larger than regular squid, patterned squid, as its name suggests, has a tiger-spotted body. Furthermore, its coloration varies from black to light depending on the environment. Because the water temperature drops further, squid cannot be caught, so anglers from all over the country quickly gather their gear and head to Yeongdeok during this season. Patterned squid plumps up in autumn, becoming the most delicious of the four seasons. A plate of squid sashimi, obtained after much hardship, is the fruit of night fishing and a source of romance for anglers. However, Kim Do-su (47), captain of a squid boat, recommends "squid stir-fried with squid" and "squid stew." A mouthful of the sweet and spicy stir-fried meat and thick squid will naturally bring a smile to your face. ■ Yeongdeok's Traditional Pottery, Embracing the Passion of Time – Jipum-myeon, Yeongdeok County, Gyeongsangbuk-do Jipum-myeon, Yeongdeok County, has long been a haven for potters, thanks to its clear waters and abundant sandy clay. While the village once boasted over a dozen traditional pottery kilns, today only one remains. Baek Gwang-hoon (76) and his son Baek Min-gyu (44) are the key players in preserving the centuries-old tradition of Yeongdeok pottery. The most arduous time of pottery work comes once a year, when all the pots are fired for a fortnight. Because the intensity of the fire is paramount, the two men sleep soundly and guard the kiln. Gwanghun's wife, Park Ok-nan (71), and daughter-in-law, Park Ji-young (42), watch over the entire process, preparing a nutritious meal for the couple. The autumn menu features pine mushroom soup. To fully appreciate the fragrant aroma, the mushrooms must be lightly cooked. Nearby, son Min-gyu grills whole pork belly in an earthenware oven, a brainchild of his son. Hanging the pork belly over the mouth of the pot and grilling it over the hot charcoal, the fat drains away, a truly exhilarating experience. Complete! Experience the heartwarming meal of this family, who create joy through pottery. ■ Even fire cannot separate the people of Ttaegaebi Village – Yeongdeok-eup, Yeongdeok County, Gyeongsangbuk-do Where raging waves crash relentlessly and the sea rocks nestle like a painting, Seokri Village in Yeongdeok-eup, Yeongdeok County, is nicknamed "Ttaegaebi Village" because its houses resemble barnacles clinging to the rocks. Its pride lies in its green seaweed! The village is so famous for its seaweed that it's even listed as a local product in the "Sejong Sillok Geography" (Annals of the Geography of King Sejong), and its seaweed, bred to withstand the crashing waves, is of exceptional quality. Seokri Village has built strong bonds of friendship through the collaborative work of seaweed farmers. The scars of the massive forest fire that broke out last March still remain. The fire, which blackened the sky and destroyed all their homes, has left villagers sharing meals together every day to support one another. The village's main chef is Jeon Jeong-yeong, 82, a practicing female diver. Today's happy meal is seaweed soup with barnacles and rice dumplings called "kkandaegi" (spicy rice dumplings) and seasoned white golbaengi (snails) with vinegar. Villagers gather in groups at the news that the precious ingredients of the sea have been enhanced by the cooking skills of Elder Jeon Jeong-yeong. We experience this happy meal, even more bonded than the clinging barnacles. ※ This video is from [Korean's Table - "Eating Green": Hope Encountered on the East Sea], which ai...
