Srisailam is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage centers in India, located in the Nallamala Hills of Andhra Pradesh on the banks of the Krishna River. It is famous for the Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna and Goddess Parvati as Bhramaramba. Why is Srisailam Special? It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is also one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, where Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Bhramaramba Devi. It is one of the very few places where a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha exist in the same temple complex. Mythological Significance According to Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati came to Srisailam to console their son Kartikeya after a dispute involving Ganesha. They chose to remain there as Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba, blessing devotees for all time. Historical Significance The temple's history dates back at least to the Satavahana period (2nd century CE), based on inscriptions found in the area. Major additions were made by rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire, including contributions from Krishnadevaraya.
