For centuries, astronomers believed that there was only one planet like Earth. This belief is a thing of the past, and recently, only one space probe has detected billions of planets that bear some resemblance to ours, and this, investigating only a small fraction of the universe, as the Kepler mission did. In light of discoveries like this, it is worth remembering how the Earth, the sun, the moon and the planets came to be, and what will happen when the sun expands to the point of swallowing everything around it, including the Earth.
