“Your teacher lied to you.” At least, that’s what we’re seeing more and more on social media. Link this unfounded accusation to the French Revolution, and we find ourselves on the verge of a state conspiracy, so steeped is this foundational event in the collective imagination. So, is the French Revolution a grand educational lie? Between persistent clichés, ideological shortcuts, and historical realities, it’s sometimes difficult to know what to believe. Today, I’m reacting to a video by a “debunker” on common misconceptions about 1789. While I generally appreciate his work, this video on the Revolution made me jump! 🧐 Between the role of famine, the “manipulation” of the people by the bourgeoisie, and the myth of Robespierre as a dictator, we’ll take stock of what the archives and current historians (like Annie Jourdan and Jean-Clément Martin) actually say. History isn't about taking sides; it's an investigation. And spoiler alert: no, your teachers didn't necessarily lie to you to make you "good citizens."
