The player takes on the role of an average teen (or, on rare occasions, a young adult/adult) vandalizing a subway train with spray paint, and is caught by The Guard and his dog. The player must run away from the two, who are chasing them. In the Sydney update, keys were added, which you can use to revive your character if the player should choose to use them for said purpose, you can also use them to unlock outfits. The game is available on iOS and Android platforms. The game was launched in May of 2012, a year later in 2013 "World Tour" became the theme of the game, where the settings are in cities like New York, Rio 2013, Sydney, Rome, Mumbai, Dubai, Paris, Tokyo and Miami, only a few of the many locations that have been featured up until this point. The game starts with a default character, Jake. However, as players collect more Coins, Event Coins, Keys, Character Tokens, and Season Hunt Tokens they will eventually get the chance to unlock new characters and outfits. As well as coins and keys, they can collect spray cans (Jake Spray Can), hats (Tricky Hat), stereos (Fresh Boombox), guitars (Spike Guitar) and UFOs (Yutani UFO), in order to unlock Tricky, Fresh, Spike, Yutani, and their outfits respectively. Also, some other characters in this game can be unlocked with Real Money and by collecting other tokens who change every update. In SubwaySurfers New Las Vegas Marathon Challenge was introduced which is similar to the main game but you get rewarded for how far you run. This mode was expanded to have more variations later on (Tag Team, Mystery Hurdles, Tag Time Attack etc.) In early 2020, Kiloo stopped developing and publishing the game for unknown reasons (however in SYBO history video it is possible that this happened due to a expired contract). That means that currently, SYBO is developing and publishing the game. In Haunted Hood , Plant Invasion was introduced which is similar to the main game but you can’t touch the floor and the vines are spreaded around the floor. In Easter Ireland there is also a similar new game mode to Plant Invasion which is Floor Is Lava. The object of the game is to run as far as possible in an endless subway while avoiding randomly generated obstacles that require the player to either jump (slide finger forward), duck (slide finger backwards) and dodge the oncoming trains in a precise manner. The game increases in difficulty with the subway altering to more tricky routes the more you run. It also increases in difficulty with the character’s running speed increasing until it caps at 3 minutes precisely after you first start the run.
