Celebrating Pentecost and the Meaning of Baptism | Life with Gwen and Joe

“Three times a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord.” (Exodus 23:17) God ordained three times per year for all of His devoted children to come together to celebrate and praise and worship God Almighty. Pentecost is one of those ordained times per year that was celebrated even in the days of the formation of the early church founded by Jesus Christ (Act 2:1). Also known as the Feast of Weeks, Pentecost occurs 50 days after Passover and commemorates God extending the offer of a Covenant to His people who had been led out of Egypt. In the days of the early Christians, Pentecost marked the pouring out of God’s Spirit on those who choose to obey. This is indeed a most meaningful time of year even still today. Parents dedicate new babies, pledging to raise them in knowledge of God and devotion to His Kingdom. Thirteen-year-old young people publicly proclaim their intention to live completely for God, choosing for themselves to follow God wholeheartedly. They underscore this decision by going under the water in baptism, and they are “rushed” into the church youth group—it is an exciting time for these new teenagers! Finally, and perhaps most meaningful of all, Pentecost is a time of baptism for those who have come to a knowledge of the Truth. Like in the days of the disciples and the early apostles, God moves hearts when they hear His message to want to put off the old self and come out of the water completely born again to serve only the One True God! This is incredibly exciting!
