Hair Colour Science | The Structure Of Hair | Hair Root | Hair Colour Theory THE HAIR ROOT - It is the part of hair which is located below the surface of the scalp. The main structures of the hair root are the follicle, hair bulb, papilla, arrector pili muscle, sebaceous glands and sudoriferous gland. 1. The follicle - is the tube like depression or pocket in the skin or scalp that contains the root, hair follicles are distributed all over the body with the exception of the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, lips and eye lids. The follicle is located into the dermis the inner layer of skin , where it is surrounds by the dermal papilla. It is not uncommon for more than one hair to grow from a single follicle. 2. The hair bulb - is the lowest area or part of hair strand. It is the thickened, club shaped structure that forms the lower part of the hair root. 3. The dermal papilla - is the small cone shaped elevation located at the base of hair bulb. The dermal papilla contains blood and nerve supply that provide nutrients needed for hair growth. 4. The arrector pili muscles - is the bunch of involuntary muscle fiber in the skin inserted in the base of the hair follicle. Fear or cold causes it to contract , which makes the hair stand up straight resulting goose bumps. 5. Sebaceous glands - are the oil glands of the skin , connected to the hair follicle. The sebaceous glands secrete and oily substane called sebum which lubricates the hair and skin. 6.
