The first ancient temple was built in the Tang Dynasty, and expanded continuously through Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. There were once dozens of temples in this mountain area. After thousands of years of wars, natural disasters and reconstruction, only 8 core ancient temples remain today, that’s why it’s called Badachu (Eight Great Sites). Many people mistake Badachu for an ordinary city park, but it actually covers three mountains with profound Buddhist culture. Lingguang Temple enshrines one of the only two Buddha’s tooth relics in the world. You can also see 800-year-old ancient ginkgo trees, imperial palace-style temples favored by emperors Kangxi and Qianlong. Climb up to Baozhu Cave, you can overlook the entire city of Beijing.
