KOMPAS.TV - Tensions in the Middle East are escalating after US President Donald Trump issued a harsh ultimatum to Iran regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route. Trump demanded that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours or face threats of attacks on its power generation facilities. "If Iran does not fully open, without threats, the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, the United States will attack and destroy its power plants, starting with the largest," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. Iran is no less threatening. It has threatened to completely close the Strait of Hormuz if its energy facilities are attacked. This strategic route has been disrupted since the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passageway through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies pass. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has declared its readiness to completely close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States continues to threaten its energy facilities. This response was Iran's response after Trump issued an ultimatum to destroy Iranian power plants if the Strait of Hormuz wasn't opened within 48 hours.
