The figure of Ibn Khaldun is one of the most controversial in Islamic history and indeed in all of human thought. He was not merely a historian, judge, or jurist, but a man who sought to understand how states rise and fall, how people and tribal loyalties are mobilized, and why history repeats itself as if governed by a hidden law not immediately apparent. Ibn Khaldun's story began in a turbulent Arab and Islamic era, rife with conflicts, collapses, betrayals, and shifting power dynamics. He lived among sultans, ministers, in prisons, and in exile, witnessing firsthand the rise and fall of governments. He wrote one of the most significant and profound texts in the history of human thought: Ibn Khaldun's Muqaddimah (Introduction). In this episode, we attempt to understand Ibn Khaldun the man, not just Ibn Khaldun the scholar. How was his consciousness formed? Why did the Muqaddimah differ so drastically from everything that came before it? Was he truly the first sociologist in history, as some describe him? Or is this description somewhat exaggerated?
