The Palermo Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office has served notices of conclusion of preliminary investigations, a prelude to the indictment, on six suspects: Carmelo Vetro, 41, from Favara, son of the deceased mafia boss Giuseppe, already sentenced to nine years in prison as part of the "Nuova Cupola" anti-mafia investigation; Salvatore Vetro, 38, Carmelo Vetro's younger brother; Antonio Lombardo, 48, Carmelo Vetro's brother-in-law; and regional director Giancarlo Teresi, 68; regional official Francesco Mangiapane, 67; and entrepreneur Giovanni Aveni, 68. The notice was also served on the company An.Sa srl, owned by Antonio Lombardo, which was allegedly managed by Carmelo Vetro, who is accused of corruption, aggravated by aiding the mafia. He, in collusion with his brother and brother-in-law, allegedly obtained public contracts or committed useful omissions, such as in inspections, through bribes and gifts. This was particularly true for the dredging of the seabed at the port of Marinella di Selinunte, the extraordinary maintenance of the seabed at the port of Donnalucata, and the replenishment of Spinasanta beach in the port of Scicli. A total of €59,500 in bribes was allegedly paid to Giancarlo Teresi, while €10,000 was paid to Francesco Mangiapane. The entrepreneur Aveni, urged by Teresi, allegedly, as the contract holder, entrusted the company owned by Antonio Lombardo, Vetro's brother-in-law, with the transportation and landfill disposal of approximately 400 tons of seagrass and sediment found on the docks of the port of Marinella di Selinunte. The six defendants have 20 days to file defenses. The Prosecutor's Office will then file a motion to commit the case to trial, unless the case is dismissed.
