He was inspired by his flatmate at the time, Edys Merril, who would constantly utter the phrase “I hate music,” due to her frustration with Bernstein constantly playing the piano and coaching singers. Bernstein dedicated the piece to her. The song premiered at the Lenox Public Library in Lenox, Massachusetts on the 24th of August, 1943, with soprano Jennie Tourel, a singer Bernstein worked with frequently. On November 13, 1943 Tourel performed the song at The Town Hall in New York City. The singer featured on this recording is American soprano Barbara Bonney, accompanied by pianist Malcolm Martineau. Bonney originally sang the cycle at Wigmore Hall in London.
