1968: How to Travel by PLANE in the 60s | Blue Peter | Retro Transport | BBC Archive
"Whenever you go to get on board an aircraft there are an awful a lot of formalities" Valerie Singleton demonstrates all the complicated procedures you can expect to experience if you ever travel in an aircraft. First, you have to get to the airport, in this case London Heathrow Airport - the busiest international airport in the world. Once at the airport, you have to get your ticket checked and hand in your luggage, then you have your passport checked, and then you have to wait for the plane. Jon Noakes meanwhile, meets the pilots to see how they prepare before a flight. Back in the studio, Val demonstrates how easy it is to pack a light holiday suitcase in 1968, thanks to a combination of skimpy modern clothes and fibreglass and plastic cases. She imagines how difficult it must have been to pack for a holiday 100 years ago, in heavy old wooden trunks full of bulky dresses.
