#238 銘仙とはどんな着物?【アンティークきもの・レトロ調・おおがや・岡崎市・呉服屋】
The Ohgaya YouTube channel has been updated. #238 What kind of kimono is meisen? • #238 銘仙とはどんな着物?【アンティークきもの・レトロ調・おおがや・岡崎市・呉服屋】 Plain-weave kasuri silk fabric Meisen is a pre-dyed fabric characterized by vibrant and bold colors and patterns. Originally, the term referred to a tightly woven weft made with thick silk threads spun from discarded or dupion cocoons, which are unsuitable for high-quality silk fabrics. It is durable and inexpensive for a silk product. Much of it was produced in the sericulture and silk weaving regions of the Kanto region, where increased production of raw silk for export after the end of the Edo period resulted in a large amount of non-standard cocoons. Meisen kimonos were all the rage from the Taisho era to the early Showa era. Originating from Isesaki and Chichibu, the five major meisen production areas now include Ashikaga, Hachioji, and Kiryu. The patterns are not limited to traditional Japanese styles; many are vibrant and influenced by Western art. Originally, this was a type of tsumugi silk made for personal use by silkworm farmers, mainly in the Kanto and Chubu regions, using hand-spun yarn that was unsellable. With the Meiji era, the class system was reformed and restrictions on clothing materials imposed on commoners were lifted. This, coupled with the commoners' desire for silk, led to silk becoming the norm for everyday wear. Although women increasingly entered the workforce, traditional Japanese clothing still dominated, failing to keep up with the Westernization of society. As a result, meisen, a type of kimono that incorporated a Western sensibility and was comparable to Western clothing, became widely accepted as everyday wear for female students and working women. Originally written in hiragana as "meisen," the name was changed in 1897 for sale at Tokyo Mitsukoshi Department Store, where the character "meisen" ("meisen") was added, signifying "products carefully selected by each producer" and the character "sen" ("sen"), signifying "something that transcends ordinary customs." The most likely explanation is that this led to the name "meisen." ■Inquiries 1-4 Renshaku-dori, Okazaki City Oogaya Tel: 0564-22-1249 ◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇ Please feel free to contact us with any kimono-related concerns. @oogaya5298 200 Years of Kimono Making: Ohgaya (Ogaya Kimono Store, Renshaku-dori, Okazaki City) Founded in 1804, Ohgaya (Ogaya Kimono Store) A kimono store in Okazaki City that has been in business for over 200 years.
