BYD statt BMW: Keine Chance mehr für deutsche Autos? | Possoch klärt | BR24

European Football Championship in Germany, thousands of spectators – the perfect platform for advertising! But instead of the expected advertising from German car manufacturers, one car brand in particular is advertising during the UEFA European Football Championship: the Chinese electric car company BYD. Even if the advertising during the European Championship is just a coincidence, German car manufacturers are actually currently unable to keep up with the dominance of Chinese electric cars. Is this the beginning of the end for the German car industry? Have we been asleep – with no chance of catching up? Possoch explains – with Beatrix Keim, Dirk Uwe Sauer, and Oliver Falck! CONTENT 00:00 The beginning of the end for the German car industry? 01:16 Chinese car manufacturers at the 2024 European Championship 03:13 Car market: China was underestimated 04:45 Battle for the car market 07:31 Germany is chasing Chinese dominance 12:54 Not all is bleak and hopeless for German car manufacturers After the electric car boom of recent years, sales of electric cars in Germany are currently weakening. Import figures from China have just shown this. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, imports fell by almost 16 percent in the first four months of the year compared to the same period last year. However, it is unclear which manufacturers this specifically affects, to what extent Chinese brands were affected, and to what extent it affected European manufacturers that produce their cars in China. The trend was also downward in May, as European figures on new registrations show. 30 percent fewer new electric cars were registered in Germany than in the same month last year. Electric car market shrinking – are EU sanctions against China still worthwhile? The declining market overlaps with the debate about punitive tariffs on Chinese electric car imports. By the beginning of July, the EU Commission will decide on high punitive tariffs due to unfair competition. However, this would also affect German and other European automakers, some of whom have their electric cars manufactured entirely in China. The consequence of the punitive tariffs would certainly be rising prices, which could lead to further declining sales. In addition to complete imports from China, many important parts for electric cars, especially batteries, often come from the People's Republic.
