Beginner Chinese HSK 2 /Picture Talk Meeting up with Friends Comprehensible Input

When meeting up with friends, the most natural and frequently used way to say it is 约 (yuē). We say things like: 和朋友约了 (hé péngyǒu yuē le) + [to do something / to go somewhere] Or ask: 你想约吗？(nǐ xiǎng yuē ma?) This is basically the equivalent of “Wanna meet up?” in English — same casual tone and how commonly it’s used. 约 (yuē) also appears in 约会 (yuēhuì), which means a date or to go on a date. But 约会 (yuēhuì) specifically refers to a romantic appointment. From my years of teaching experience, I’ve come to notice that my students tend to use 见面 (jiànmiàn) for “meet up”. But the most common and natural way to say “meet up” is to use 约 a verb(yuē), such as 约一下 (yuē yīxià), 你想约吗？(nǐ xiǎng yuē ma?), 我们约一下 (wǒmen yuē yīxià), 我们约一个时间 (wǒmen yuē yīgè shíjiān). 见面 (jiànmiàn) is not the same as “meet up casually” in daily usage. The character 约 (yuē) on its own simply means to make an appointment or to arrange to meet. It can be used when meeting anyone: friends, business partners, even doctors.
