Nikolai Grintser's lecture, "What Does the 'Homeric Question' Sound Like Today?", is part of the series "Epic Histories of Peoples: From Assyria to Karelia" /in collaboration with the Anima Libera Club of Ideas and Knowledge (Hotel Indigo St. Petersburg-Tchaikovsky)/ Announcement: The lecture is devoted to the current state of the study of the Homeric poems. It attempts to demonstrate that, in its classical formulation, the famous "Homeric Question" can be considered largely resolved, but this resolution (achieved primarily through the efforts of two scholarly schools: the non-analytical and the "oral") gives rise to a host of new, specific and extremely interesting problems. When did the Homeric text become recorded in writing? How should we interpret the significant discrepancies in the earliest papyrus fragments of the Iliad and Odyssey? How do the Homeric poems relate to the so-called "contemporary" texts? What constitutes an "epic cycle" and why did the Iliad and Odyssey stand out from the original circle of epic tales and acquire such unquestionable authority? How should Homer's formulaic language and the very concept of an epic formula be interpreted? Is there any point in searching for later insertions into the Homeric text? Nikolai Grintser's lecture explores all this.
