As early as the 16th century, a moated castle was mentioned here as the predecessor of the present-day castle. After repeated changes of ownership, the complex fell to Prince William of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1733, who sold it in 1734 to the Imperial Baron and later Imperial Count Gustav Adolf von Gotter. Gotter, a diplomat who had risen from commoner status to Imperial Count, was looking for a prestigious country estate to retreat from his diverse duties at the Prussian and Saxe-Gotha courts. In 1736, the first renovation work began on Molsdorf Castle, creating a late Baroque complex with a French-style garden and elaborately furnished staterooms. His house was one of the most splendid in Vienna. Magnificent carriages and horses were at his command. In a word, his court was almost like that of a prince. Nothing, however, caused him greater expense than his lavishly furnished table; for he loved the pleasures of the table only too much and the numerous companions around him, such as Imperial Court Councilors and foreign ambassadors. Gotter's wines also achieved fame and were a must at the tables of the noble Viennese.
