Marie Göbel: Human Dignity as the Foundation of Human Rights (Kant Lecture Series)
Lecture Series Kant and Contemporary Philosophy University of Bochum, Germany Marie Göbel (University of Bochum): Human Dignity as the Foundation of Human Rights December 9th 2022 | University of Bochum, Germany Abstract: The claim that human rights are grounded in human dignity is both prominent and notoriously disputed. In my talk I will argue, first, that human dignity in the human rights context should be understood as a universal moral status; and secondly, that we find the main elements of this interpretation of human dignity in Kant’s practical philosophy. Finally, I will indicate what this interpretation implies with regard to the claim that human dignity is the foundation of human rights. The lecture series Kant and Contemporary Philosophy took place at the Ruhr University Bochum from November 2022 to June 2023. Its main aim was to bring together Kant scholars interested in the relevance of Kant’s critical philosophy for central issues in contemporary epistemology, ethics, political philosophy and aesthetics. The lecture series was jointly organized by the Kant in South America Consortium and by the Digital Kant Center North Rhine-Westphalia, project location Bochum.
