(Anchor) The largest data center is being constructed in Haenam Solasido, which is rich in solar energy. Jeollanam-do and KEPCO will supply renewable energy, and seven companies, including Samsung C&T, are investing. Reporter Shin Gwang-ha reports. (Reporter) This is the solar power complex, with a capacity of 98 MW, established in the Guseong District of Solasido. Currently, it is a facility capable of generating electricity and is equipped with energy storage systems to ensure a stable power supply. Once the 1 GW solar power complex in the Budong District is constructed here, Solasido will be completed as a renewable energy integrated complex symbolized by RE100. Based on abundant solar power, the largest data center cluster is being established. Under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, South Jeolla Province, KEPCO, and seven investment companies have signed an investment agreement for the Solasido Data Center Park. The seven investment companies plan to construct 25 data center buildings with a capacity of 40 MW in stages, investing 10 trillion won by 2037. The amount of electricity generated to operate a single data center is 1 GW annually, equivalent to the power used by 6,000 four-person households. Data centers, often referred to as "electricity-guzzling monsters," have long been concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area and have been cited as a cause of power grid imbalances. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) plans to continuously promote the relocation of data centers to regional areas to improve the operational efficiency of the power grid. Park Sang-hee, Head of the New Industry and Distributed Energy Division at MOTIE: "Just as the Regional Development Committee (not just MOTIE) is interested in data centers, we will work together at the pan-governmental level to ensure the smooth regional distribution of data centers." Jeonnam's solar power production capacity stands at 6.6 GW, accounting for 22% of the total domestic solar power output. Considering renewable energy production, the power grid, and land prices, the attraction of data centers to Jeonnam is expected to accelerate.
