Sand dunes were flattened, swamps were drained, and thousands of workers poured in from across the country to create what many believed would be the model industrial city of the future. This is the story of how Gary rose. From its beginnings as a corporate experiment to becoming the largest company town in America, Gary’s early decades were filled with explosive growth, innovation, and opportunity — but also deep divisions and harsh realities.
