Evlerinden uzaktaki mevsimlik tarım işçileri, bayramı buruk geçiriyor

Seasonal agricultural workers arriving in Ordu from eastern and southeastern provinces are spending Eid al-Adha away from their homes. Settled in accommodation areas, the workers hope for a productive hazelnut harvest, which is just days away. With the hazelnut harvest just days away, agricultural workers arriving in the city are setting up their tents in accommodation areas prepared by the Ordu Governor's Office. The accommodation areas in the Altınordu, Fatsa, and Ünye districts are beginning to fill with tents from agricultural worker families. The workers are hopeful that the hazelnut harvest season, which begins on August 7th, will be productive. Women at the accommodation area are cooking yufka (a kind of flatbread) on a sac, while young people are collecting wood chips from forests to solve the fuel problem. "HAZELNUT WAGE IS LOW" Orbet Gökpınar, who came from the Southeast for the hazelnut harvest, explained that they traveled kilometers from their homes for Eid al-Adha to work. "We came to Ordu for the hazelnut harvest this year as well. We're hopeful about the hazelnut harvest. We're afraid this year because of the coronavirus. The hazelnut wage is 110 lira, which is very low. We paid 3,000 lira for travel expenses. We're very happy to be independent, but the wage is very low. Local workers earn 200 lira, while we earn 110 lira. There's a problem here too." "WE SPEND THE HOLIDAYS ABROAD" Sabri Yabatu said, "I've been coming to Ordu for the hazelnut harvest for 18 years. We came here to earn money. If they let us, we'll work. We've started talking with the orchard owners and making agreements. We don't have a holiday. We'd be happier spending the holidays in our hometown. But we can't afford it. We have to go out. We don't have any land or property. We have to spend the holidays abroad." "BREAD TROUBLE" İsmail Geçgel noted that they were unable to enjoy the holiday because they had to travel far from home to work, saying, "It's a bread TROUBLE. It wouldn't be right if we didn't come here. We're already agricultural workers. We work in a greenhouse and watermelon business. And then we come here. Whenever there's work, we run off to wherever. This doesn't allow us to fully enjoy the holiday. People come from Germany and abroad to see their loved ones. We come here for bread. That's why we can't enjoy the holiday." "WE'RE NOT ENJOYING THE HOLIDAYS VERY WELL" Aziz Mızrak said, "We've been coming to Ordu for the hazelnut harvest for the last 5-6 years. We're not very hopeful about the harvest. The daily wages haven't been set correctly. It's not saving us any money. We've been on the road for two or three days. We've lost 2,000-3,000 lira. It's not worth these prices. Tomorrow is the holiday, and we're far from home. That's not a good feeling at all. We're abroad. We're not enjoying the holidays very well."
