If the heavenly allusions in the album opener escaped you, this scrapped alternate version makes it all too clear; Lynne had lost his father, and is desperately trying to bargain with God in the same manner Kate Bush had tried a year prior. Where Bush’s Deal With God is hopeful and triumphant, Lynne’s Father had no sympathy, and Lynne is left without proper closure. It had been Lynne’s father who inspired Eldorado, ELO’s first US gold record. As if Philip Lynne’s motivation had been responsible for ELO’s success, Balance Of Power became ELO’s first record since that failed to be certified in the States. The track had been written during Philip’s illness, but his death caused Lynne to withdraw this version of the track, finding it far too personal to release.
