Herpetos: del miedo al asombro

Bahía Solano, in the heart of the Chocó biogeographic region, is a prime destination for the study and conservation of global biodiversity: humpback whales, marine life, and numerous bird species attract the attention of tourists and scientists. But as night falls, other creatures take center stage: frogs, toads, snakes, and lizards join their voices to the song of nature. With the aim of describing in detail the invaluable herpetofauna of Bahía Solano, a group of students from EAFIT University explored the jungle of the Pacific Botanical Garden alongside herpetologist Juan Camilo Arredondo, professor and researcher at CES University, and an expert team of co-researchers and local guides. In the process, students like Esteban Garzón Franco discovered their true calling as biologists in the study of herpetofauna. Despite the risks of fieldwork in one of the most rugged and humid rainforests on the planet, Juan Camilo and Esteban's passion led them, along with their collaborators, to compile a unique record of the amphibian and reptile biodiversity of Bahía Solano. With the support of CES University, EAFIT University, and the Pacific Botanical Garden, this project not only disseminates academic findings but also highlights the role of local communities in understanding and conserving biodiversity. "Herpetos: From Fear to Wonder" shows how scientific knowledge and local wisdom can interact to transform fear into fascination and, at the same time, become a tool for sustainable economic development for the communities of the Colombian Pacific.
