Manfred Haferburg is a graduate engineer in nuclear engineering. He began his career as a reactor operator at the Greifswald nuclear power plant, later becoming a senior shift supervisor and, from 1985, headed the plant's simulator center. After 1990, he worked for energy companies and later for the World Association of Nuclear Operators. In this capacity, he worked at more than 120 nuclear power plants worldwide. He is a proven expert in energy supply with decades of global experience. In his lecture to a packed audience, Haferburg explored the question of whether Germany's energy transition has already failed. Germany has abandoned a stable, affordable, and efficient energy system that had developed and functioned well over decades. Now, it is being replaced by a weather-dependent system that jeopardizes security of supply and the country's industrial base, and is causing electricity prices to skyrocket. Haferburg is particularly critical of the further expansion of wind power. Wind turbines only generate electricity when the wind blows; they do not replace guaranteed power plant capacity and must be supplemented by expensive imports or new power plants yet to be built. Citizens are not being properly informed about the true costs. The real reason for the expansion of wind energy, according to Haferburg, is economic interests. Operators and investors profit from state-guaranteed subsidies, while citizens have to pay for grid expansion, subsidies, necessary reserve power plants, and rising electricity prices. Haferburg's arguments make it clear: The question of whether a wind turbine will be built on the Lammerskopf near Heidelberg is not a trivial matter of only local importance. This issue concerns a fundamental misstep in energy policy, in which a select few enrich themselves at the expense of the general public. "The energy transition," says Haferburg, "is the largest redistribution of wealth from the bottom to the top in German history since the feudal era." Those who vote on wind power in the Heidelberg Forest need to know more than the city's official promotional messages. This isn't about saving the climate with a few wind turbines. It's about our security of supply, about costs that are not being accurately quantified, and about large-scale environmental destruction. ... Share this video.
