Andy Burnham: Labour's last hope?
Labour MP for Makerfield Josh Simons this week announced that he plans to step down from his position, in order to trigger a by-election and allow Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham a chance to win a seat in parliament, and therefore a route back into the parliamentary Labour Party, with a view, in theory, to becoming the successor to Sir Keir Starmer as leader of the party and ultimately, Prime Minister. Lewis Goodall sits down with Simons to discuss his thought process behind stepping down in a seat which isn't a foregone conclusion, as well as what comes next for a 32-year-old with a long political career ahead of him. There's also chat about why Andy Burnham is the right man at the right time for Labour, and why the current government is failing to win over the population.
