Over recent years there has been increased interest in the use of virtualisation in many aspects of computing including the data-center. As a result virtualised networking has become more and more important as mission-critical services are deployed in virtualised environments. VPS, SaaS, Cloud are all part of the resulting buzzword soup. Open vSwitch seeks to provide virtual networking capabilities for edge-nodes that extends beyond the current bridging implementation in the Linux kernel.
