24 Hours on Ex-Nuclear Missile Base | Comiso Air Station | Part 1

I actually spent more like 30 hours there, but who's counting? The base is massive and there were many buildings that I didn't have time to visit in the 30 hours. I had a few setbacks: food was stolen and it was much colder than expected at night, so I didn't sleep much. There were many lingering questions I had such as: are there people squatting there (I suspect so)? and What happened to the Commissary and what's the story behind all the burnt mattresses? I got a lot of the information from Jack Baker's Book "Welcome to Comiso" which is available on Amazon and is actually a pretty interesting read on the relatively unknown Operation Husky. It included detailed information on the layout of the base, history, and descriptions of the glcms, ready storage shelters, transporter erector launchers, and GAMA...as well as many personal and poignant stories of those involved. Let me know what you would like to see in part 2 or any questions you may have about part 1 and I will try to answer them. The place was pretty thoroughly ransacked, either by the Americans upon departure and/or over the past few decades by local scavengers. There weren't too many lingering artifacts, though I found a few in part 2. Nevertheless, many of the structures were intact and still seemed to attest to moments frozen in times past.
