Among the trees we commonly know, there are many species belonging to the Cupressaceae family. I will introduce the major genera and representative trees belonging to them. Major genera and trees of the Cupressaceae family: Cupernia genus (Platycladus) Cupernia cerevisiae (Platycladus orientalis): This is a common cupressaceae tree in Korea. It is characterized by flat leaves and horn-like protrusions on its fruits. Chamaecyparis genus (Chamaecyparis) Cupernia cerevisiae (Chamaecyparis obtusa): It is characterized by distinct Y-shaped white stomata on the back of the leaves and round, smooth cones. It is popular because of its high phytoncide content. Chamaecyparis pisifera: Similar to cypress, but the tips of the leaves are pointed and the stomata on the back of the leaves are W-shaped. There are various cultivars for gardening. Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest Wilma': Although cypress in the narrow sense is not a cypress, the tree commonly called yulma belongs to the genus Cupressus in the family Cupressaceae. It is characterized by its dark green leaves and refreshing fragrance, and is often grown as an indoor plant. Siberian Cypress (Cryptomeria japonica): The leaves are long and densely attached in the shape of needles, and the bark is split vertically. Taxodium Taxodium distichum: A deciduous conifer that is unique in that its leaves turn red in the fall and fall. It grows well in wetlands and has the characteristic of roots that rise into the air, called 'gi-geun (氣根)'. In addition to this, there are various genera and species in the cypress family, and each has unique leaf shapes, bark, and fruit characteristics, making it fun to distinguish them. Pine, cedar, cypress, cypress, and japonica each have their own stories and legends. They are mostly related to their characteristics or uses. 1. Pine (Cryptomeria japonica) Greek mythology - Transformation of Cyparissus: The most widely known legend of the cedar is the story of 'Cyparissus' in Greek mythology. The beautiful boy Cyparissus was loved by Apollo, and accidentally killed the sacred deer he cherished. Deeply saddened, Cyparissus begged Apollo to turn him into a tree so that he could mourn forever, despite his consolation. Apollo turned him into a cedar, and the cedar became a symbol of sorrow and mourning. Therefore, cedar trees were also planted in cemeteries and places related to funerals. Jomonsugi in Yakushima, Japan: Yakushima, Japan, is famous for its giant cedar trees, known as "Yakusugi," that are thousands of years old. Among them, the "Jomonsugi" is estimated to be over 7,000 years old and is considered sacred to the point of being called a living fossil.
