The citrus leafminer (Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, 1856) is a lepidopteran belonging to the Gracillariidae family,[1] widespread on all continents but recently introduced to Italy (1994). It lives on all Citrus trees, but can also attack plants belonging to other families: Oleaceae, Loranthaceae, Lauraceae, Leguminosae, Salicaceae, and Tiliaceae. It is a species native to Southeast Asia that first spread to Australia and Africa, then in 1993 to America (Florida) and Europe, starting with Spain. In Italy, the presence of the leafminer was detected in Sardinia in the autumn of 1994 and in the areas of Calabria and Sicily in July 1995. Virtually all citrus growing areas and all citrus species were affected within a few months (July-September). P. citrella is a leafminer that feeds on young leaves, shoots, and, sporadically, fruit, causing desiccation, necrosis, and curling, resulting in the loss of affected leaves. .......... Adults are active during the night. P. citrella overwinters in larval galleries, either as larvae or as pupae. Females lay a variable number of detached eggs, from 7 to 108, on tender leaves, and on both leaf blades, near the midrib. After a short incubation period (2 to 10 days), the newly hatched larvae, which are initially plasmophagous (type I), penetrate the upper or lower epidermis of the leaf, excavating snake-like mines less than 1 mm in diameter, but which only affect the epidermis. Type II larvae emerge from the leaf blades and fold a small portion of the leaf blade with silky threads, forming a shelter, where they pupate and hatch into a new adult after 5-8 days. Depending on environmental conditions, the small moth can complete 5 to 13 generations per year, with development slowing down in colder periods; even at temperatures of 26-29°C, the development cycle lasts about 15 days. The first attacks appear around mid-June, as long as nighttime temperatures do not fall below 12°C (the insect's thermal threshold). Source: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phylloc...
