Nurture Doesn’t Mean Control
How much of who we become is shaped by nature, and how much is shaped by nurture? In this BOACAST conversation, David and Producer Duke revisit the classic nature vs. nurture debate and challenge one of the assumptions many people bring to it: that nurture is a kind of control variable. Producer Duke shares an argument that compares nurture to caring for a plant in a garden. Good nurture matters. A plant may need pruning, training, support, better soil, sunlight, water, and protection from things that would damage it. But nurture does not turn one kind of plant into another. It helps the plant become the fullest version of what it already is. That distinction matters deeply when we think about parenting, education, gifts, talent, and human development. Nurture can shape, support, discipline, strengthen, and guide a child. But it does not mean we can train every child into any outcome we want. A child may not become a musician, athlete, scholar, leader, or artist simply because someone decided to cultivate that path. This conversation explores genetics, environment, parenting, potential, identity, and the humility required to help people become who they are — not merely who we imagined they could be. #BOACAST #NatureVsNurture #Parenting #HumanDevelopment #Growth nature vs nurture, nurture and genetics, parenting and potential, human development, talent and genetics, raising children, gifts and abilities, nature and environment, what nurture can change, what nurture cannot change, child development, parenting philosophy, Producer Duke, David BOACAST
