THE BEAGLE - Hunting dog to Laboratory Test Animal

For centuries, the Beagle was bred for one purpose: to hunt. Developed in Britain in the 1800s from older scent hounds, the Beagle was perfected to follow the scent of rabbits and hares for miles across the countryside. With one of the finest noses in the canine world, long ears that help trap scent close to the ground, incredible stamina and an unwavering determination to follow a trail, it remains one of history's greatest hunting dogs. In this episode of Animal Watch, we meet much-loved pet Beagles in Sussex and discover the true nature and character of this cheeky loving dog and why this cheerful, affectionate breed became one of Britain's most iconic hunting companions. We talk about what they're like as pets and what its like to live with them. But today, the Beagle has another, far darker legacy as we then travel to meet Scarlett, a rescued laboratory Beagle whose life took a heartbreaking turn before she was given a second chance. We explore why Beagles became the breed most commonly used in medical research—chosen not because they are different, but because they are gentle, sociable, trusting and easy to handle. Next, we travel to Camp Beagle, where campaigners have maintained a 24-hour protest outside MBR Acres for over four years. MBR Acres is the UK's largest breeder of Beagles for scientific research, producing up to 2,000 puppies each year for research establishments, making it one of the most controversial facilities in Britain. Finally, we tell the remarkable story of the Ridglan Farms Beagles in the United States, whose release became one of the biggest Beagle rescue stories in recent history, giving hundreds of former laboratory dogs the chance to experience freedom, family life and the outdoors for the very first time. From the rolling hills of the English countryside to the laboratory, this is the extraordinary story of one of the world's most loved—and most controversial—dog breeds.
