Music by Background:    • Video   Marielle Franco was the daughter of Marinete Francisco and Antonio da Silva Neto. Raised Catholic, she was born and raised in a favela in the Complexo da Maré, in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, and proudly presented herself as a "child of Maré". In 1990, at the age of 11, she began working with her parents as a street vendor, saving money to help pay for her studies. At eighteen, she left her job as a street vendor and began working as an early childhood educator in a daycare center, where she stayed for two years. In her teens, from 14 to 17, she was a dancer for the funk group Furacão 2000. In 1998, she gave birth to her first and only daughter, Luyara, the result of a temporary relationship. That same year, she enrolled in the first community college preparatory course offered to young people from the favelas of the Complexo da Maré. In 2000, she began advocating for human rights after one of her friends was fatally injured in a shootout between police and drug traffickers in Maré. In 2002, she entered the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, graduating in social sciences with a full scholarship obtained through the University for All Program (Prouni). After graduating in Social Sciences, she completed a master's degree in public administration at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), where she defended her dissertation entitled "UPP - The reduction of the favela to three letters: an analysis of the public security policy of the State of Rio de Janeiro". In 2004, Franco, who was an activist for LGBT rights, began a romantic relationship with Mônica Benício. In 2017, the couple decided to move in together in the Tijuca neighborhood along with Luyara, Marielle's daughter.
