TAILLE DE LA VIGNE : LA TECHNIQUE « VALLÉE DE LA MARNE » EXPLIQUÉE AVEC UN VIGNERON DE CHAMPAGNE

After introducing you to the pruning method applied to the Chardonnay grape variety in Champagne (the "Chablis" pruning):    • COMMENT TAILLE-T-ON LA VIGNE EN CHAMPAGNE ...  , NewsJardinTV returned to Belval-sous-Châtillon near Épernay to meet David Faivre, winemaker and "terroir revealer," as he likes to say. David gives a real technical lesson to Patrick Mioulane, the editor-in-chief of NewsJardinTV, who is pruning a vine himself under the guidance of the professional. The "Valle de la Marne" method, which is explained here, applies to the "Meunier" grape variety, a mutation of Pinot Noir that produces a grape with black skin but white juice. David indicates that the vine must be pruned every year (in February-March) to control its growth (it's a climbing vine) and optimize fruit production in terms of both quantity and quality. The rules are strict in Champagne, and the planting distance (along the row + between rows) must not exceed 2.50 m. Patrick points out that grapes are produced on this year's shoots that have grown on the previous year's. So if too much old wood is left, the vine will be unproductive. Our two experts have chosen a fairly dense vine (to complicate things a little...). They examine it to distinguish its different productions. The rachet is the shoot that developed on a small spur of three buds left during last year's pruning. This is the shoot that will be "launched" and will bear the fruiting shoots. Of course, a new shoot (only one) must be planned for the following year's production. It is selected from a vine shoot placed as far back as possible from the vine. The two friends remove the suckers (shoots that develop directly on the old wood) and select the best-positioned shoot for the shoot, removing the others. The shoot must have 9 buds. The tendrils and old grape stalks are removed, taking care not to damage the buds. The vine currently has two frameworks. The goal of "Vallée de la Marne" pruning is to form one and remove another every year. The oldest is therefore removed. The shoot and the fruiting shoot will be tied horizontally to the wire frame, but first, all excess shoots are removed because the fruiting branches must not overlap. Tying is important to ensure the grape-bearing branches are securely held in place. And finally, all that's left is to prune the extension, which should bear six buds.
