1966 Nigerian Coup | Rare Footage Captures Start of Military Dictatorship
On 15 January 1966, a group of Nigerian army officers staged a coup against the Federal government, citing widespread corruption and nepotism among the country’s political leaders. In the aftermath, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi assumed power as Head of State, stating that his priority was to restore law and order and maintain Nigeria’s existing foreign policy. Troops were deployed to secure key locations, and the rebellious officers surrendered. Meanwhile, President Nnamdi Azikiwe, who was in Britain receiving treatment for a chest illness, commented that he would delay his return to Nigeria to avoid worsening the situation. #Nigeria #1966Coup #AguiyiIronsi #NigerianHistory #MilitaryCoup #NnamdiAzikiwe #NigeriaPolitics #AfricanHistory #PostColonialAfrica #1960sHistory #colonialism To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/search/...
