To mark the centenary of his birth on November 7, 1913, Joël Calmettes, already the director of two films about the Nobel Prize winner – The Tragedy of Happiness (with Jean Daniel) and Committed Journalism – travels the world to meet readers of all ages and backgrounds who have been deeply affected by his work. The result is remarkable: in Living with Camus*, a Canadian floor layer, an Algerian pastry apprentice, a French police officer, a German aid worker, and a former American death row inmate rub shoulders... Some saw their lives transformed after reading *The Stranger or The Myth of Sisyphus ("I discovered that even if life is absurd, you have to live it"); others draw daily energy from him ("Camus is like a traveling companion"; "I found my double in him"); still others are practically worshippers of him ("He's like a saint I can invoke at any moment: at the office, at home, in a nightclub..."). A surprise guest in this documentary, singer Patti Smith confides that she often returns to Camus when she stops touring and isolates herself to write new songs. "He makes me want to work," she says. These poignant testimonies allow us to trace the outlines of a body of work that consistently placed humanity at its center, a humanity confronted with the disorder of the modern world, relentlessly—and lucidly—seeking to find meaning in its life. Unwittingly, these passionate individuals are paying Camus the greatest tribute a writer could hope for: seeing his words come alive.
