SNAP JIGGING LARGE STRIPED BASS

Snap jigging has to be one of the greatest ways to catch striped bass. Many people question if light tackle fishing negatively affects the survival of the fish. With proper techniques, the fight time should be the same as fishing with larger gear, resulting in the same risk of injuring the fish. The key is to load the entire rod, all the way down the blank, and keep that type of bend the entire time. This will result in putting the maximum pressure on the fish, drastically reducing fight time. It's impressive how much power you can generate from these light rods, with 10lb test braid, and 20lb fluorocarbon leaders. Using light tackle allows you to fish with smaller jigs and bucktails that better represent the baits that the fish are mostly feeding on. Snap jigging is a great way to mimic sand eels, spearing, peanut bunker, or any smaller sized bait. The snap imitates the quick fleeing jump that startled bait makes when they are nervous. Bait fish do this lunge much more often than actively fleeing, and the striped bass are keyed in on that response.
