On May 3, 1999, a detachment from the Pakistani Northern Light Infantry crossed the LOC and captured Tiger Hill, Dras, Kaksar, and the Kargil sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. This was possible because at that time, the Indian Army would leave hill posts unguarded due to heavy snowfall. Taking advantage of this, the Pakistani Army captured these points in Kargil with little resistance! Pervez Musharraf himself had outlined the two main objectives for capturing these areas: First, to cut off Siachen from India.
