SURVIVING THE WORLD'S WORST BORDER TOWN (Hustlers, Fake Police & Near Fistfights in Rosso, Senegal)

Have you ever wondered where you can find the worst border crossing on Earth? Welcome to Rosso, the notoriously sleazy border town on the Maurtania - Senegal border. Widely regarded as the most corrupt border crossing on the planet (including by the New York Times!) this forlorn outpost on Senegal's northern border is sure to be the worst part of your overland trip across West Africa. Here, you'll be met by fake police officers demanding your passport (which will then be held for ransom), have your passage blocked by would-be guides, and be threatened with a fistfight or two, all in an effort to prevent you from reaching the actual border police a short walk from the ferry terminal. This place was the worst I've visited out of 137 countries visited thus far, and I highly recommend crossing at the Diama border east of Rosso as an alternative. Heading south from Nouakchott, I travelled 2.5 hours south to the banks of the Senegal River. Here, a free-of-charge ferry will carry you across into infamous Rosso. Be careful not to accept any offers of pirogue rides (10 Euros) as these are unsafe compared to the free, government-run ferry. Ignore all claims that the ferry isn't running today - they're all lies! After crossing the river, I was met by two fake police officers who demanded my passport, and a shouting match ensued. Eventually, I attracted the attention of the actual Senegalese border officers, who came down to the riverbank and escorted me up to the actual border station.
