It describes the changes/effect/influence that accompanies a prior change. 睡眠時間が減るにしたがって、寝坊しがちだ。 As my sleeping hours decrease, I tend to oversleep. 収入が高くなるにしたがって、払うべき税金も増えます。 As my income gets higher, taxes that I must pay increases. 時代の変化に従って、トレンドは変わってしまうおそれがある。 There is a risk the trends could change as the times change. 2. にしたがってcan also mean “according to”, “in accordance with”. It is used when something is done following what laws, standards, conventions, rules, traditions, plans, needs and so on. 規則にしたがって、タバコを吸うわけにはいかない。 You can't smoke according to the rules. 日本人は伝統にしたがって、大晦日に年越しそばを食べるものだ。 According to tradition, Japanese people eat toshikoshi soba on New Year's Eve.
