In Brazil, a white man lives, on average, almost six years longer than a black man. Researchers have discovered a molecular mechanism that may explain part of this difference. In 2004, neuroscientist Michael Meaney identified that the environment experienced by a mother can chemically alter the DNA of her offspring, blocking or releasing genes linked to the stress system. Subsequent studies with Holocaust survivors and with children of pregnant Dutch women during the 1944 famine showed that this mechanism occurs in humans and can remain active for decades. What is being debated now is whether chronic stress produced by specific social conditions leaves transmissible biological marks and what this means for how we interpret health disparities between distinct population groups. The latest discovery changes the question.
