101 Strings – Fly Me To The Moon (Audio Spectrum AST-101) | Full Reel-to-Reel Preservation

Welcome back to the channel. Today, we are diving into a mid-century masterpiece of "The Sound of Magnificence." This is a high-resolution preservation of the Audio Spectrum AST-101 4-track stereo reel, featuring the iconic 101 Strings Orchestra. The Provenance & Recording While often found on budget labels like Somerset or Alshire, the "DNA" of this recording is anything but budget. Recorded at the Musikhalle in Hamburg, Germany, these sessions used a massive ensemble primarily comprised of musicians from the Hamburg State Opera and the NDR Symphony Orchestra. Captured on high-end Telefunken decks, the recording quality is legendary for its massive dynamic range and the "Wall of Sound" arrangement style. You can hear the natural 2-second decay of the Musikhalle, providing a lush, organic reverb that digital plugins still struggle to emulate today. The Music This specific tape is a beautiful mix of mid-century standards and "Noir" originals written by in-house arrangers like Robert Lowden. Tracks like "Blues in the Shadows" and "So Late" feel like a lost 1960s film score, perfectly capturing that Space Age bachelor pad atmosphere. It is romantic, expansive, and—above all—luscious. Technical Workflow & Preservation To ensure the highest fidelity for this archive, the transfer was performed using a precision Akai GX-636 tape deck, known for its legendary glass and crystal ferrite heads. The signal was encoded using an Apple MacBook Pro, and the audio underwent a meticulous restoration and enhancement process in Audacity to balance the levels and preserve the "breath" of the original Hamburg masters while managing decades of tape aging.
