Natural Materials - Building with Lime Masterclass | ACAN
MASTERCLASS: BUILDING WITH LIME Date recorded: 9th June 2022 Lime has been used for over a thousand years in this country alone, but the use of building limes have increased considerably in recent years. Limes offer positive environmental benefits: Being ‘weaker’, limes allow the re-use of salvageable materials such as brick and stone. Limes are produced using much less energy than cement. Lime allows the walls of buildings to breathe, preventing moisture from becoming trapped in the walls which can cause significant damage over time. By helping to regulate the moisture in walls, lime reduces the humidity in a room and minimises the risk of moisture-related contaminants such as mould or condensation. Watch the video to learn from expert speakers: 🌿 Barbara Jones - School of Natural Building Barbara is the founder of the School of Natural Building. A trained carpenter and joiner as well as an expert in straw construction, she is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts; was awarded both a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Construction and the UKRC's Woman of Outstanding Achievement Award. 🌿 Edd Walker - Cornish Lime Edd is the Technical Director at the Cornish Lime Company, having worked there for a little over 9 years. Edd runs the lab that creates new materials, and tests current materials and products. Edd currently sit on the BSI panels for both Lime (EN459) and mortar (EN998-2) having recently joined through a sponsorship by the BLF. 🌿 Tom Robinson - Adaptavate Tom is a former builder, specialising in restoration of historic buildings in the UK. He studied a Masters in Sustainable Architecture at the Centre for Alternative Technology, where he developed a bio composite board as an alternative to plasterboard. This was the start of Adaptavate. He is also an industry speaker and lecturer at his former University, focussing on disruptive business models, building physics and transforming the construction industry. #naturalmaterials #lime #naturalbuilding #lowcarbon #retrofit #limeplaster #limeboard #limecycle SUBSCRIBE: https://bit.ly/3qYItt1 For more information about ACAN and to join our mailing list visit: https://www.architectscan.org/home Theme music by Own Crouch https://www.owencrouchsound.com/ Welcome to the OFFICIAL Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) YouTube channel! Architects Climate Action Network is a network of individuals from within architecture and it’s related built environment professions taking action to address the twin crises of climate and ecological breakdown. We recognise the compelling scientific consensus that our present trajectory will lead to catastrophe if we do not make ambitious and radical changes as a matter of urgency. We are already seeing the consequences. We also acknowledge that the built environment is a major contributing factor to the climate crisis and as such requires complete and rapid transformation (which we are yet to witness). We can no longer remain secluded within personal and professional silos and instead must harness our agency as citizens with shared professional backgrounds to bring about the necessary changes to our industry. As a network of individuals, ACAN is able to act at speed, without conflict of interest, and is open to methods that may be unavailable to other campaign organisations. #ACAN #ClimateChange #Architecture
