Catching BIG Salmon: Trolling Shiners on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH
The Spring Landlocked Salmon Fishery on Lake Winnipesaukee is celebrated by winter-weary anglers all throughout New Hampshire. Shortly after Ice-Out in April, fish are hungry & tend to feed closer to the surface of the lake, allowing us to catch the Massive Salmon while trolling live bait on Down-riggers behind a 25-foot Sport Craft. SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube Channel: / @explorenewengland Spring Fishing is something that anglers like veteran guide Jason Parent of Salmon Patrol Charters cherish each year for its abundance in Landlocked Salmon. While live baits like shiners are hard to beat, a variety of flashy spoons such as the orange DB Smelt and silver-copper Sutton 61, as well as traditional flies such as the Grey Ghost, Pumpkin’ Head, and Joe’s Smelt rigged with No. 4 single hooks, also work well for catching Salmon in the early season. Guides reveal some of their proven tips & techniques for targeting trophy spring salmon on a late-April trip out of Fay’s Boat Yard in Gilford. Even though it was just a couple weeks after Ice-Out, the water temperature was already approaching the 50-degree mark. As Jason explained, the ideal water temperature for salmon fishing is 54 degrees (although most spring fishing takes place in cooler water). Each bait is hooked crosswise through the nostrils on a No. 10 Owner live-bait hook. Live baits must be trolled no faster than 1.5 miles per hour. Experienced anglers often deploy drift socks to slow the boat. When Trolling for Salmon, Jason prefers using Leadcore line on a Down-rigger while utilizing the “controlled depth” technique to target different levels of the water column. His go-to reel is a Daiwa AccuDepth model with a line counter that makes it easy to reset the spread after a big fish is landed. The drag is set light to keep the hook from tearing loose on the strike or when the fish makes a sudden run.
