Wild Mare protects her foal at all cost | Fighting off any who dare approach | Alberta Wild Horses

A wild mare fights to keep her foal safe and to keep back the band and the band stallion. She just had her foal in the early morning hours. Comodo, a wild stallion, decided she was ready to breed. Compass, the mare, rejected this advance, bucking, kicking, and fighting off Comodo. Why? Comodo is her stallion. She has been with Comodo since early 2025, so why would she be rejecting his advances? A wild mare typically goes into "foal heat" 5-12 days after she foals. This is when she goes into heat, then she will be receptive and ready to breed. This foal is not even 24 hours old, which means Compass is not yet in heat. While Comodo is ready, she is not. This is not a random stallion; this is her stallion, and CourageKeeper, the foal, is Comodo's bloodline. So Compass is not worried about her foal as much as she is trying to tell Comodo that she is just not ready. As for her bucking at the yearlings, they are only curious, but she is protective, setting boundaries between her foal and the yearlings will help keep little CourageKeeper safe.
