Elektro-Löschfahrzeug: Das eLHF der Berliner Feuerwehr
It's the world's first fully electric fire engine: the Berlin eLHF. It was handed over to the Berlin Fire Department as a prototype last fall and has been deployed on real missions since February. The vehicle is currently located at the Mitte fire station, but will be deployed to other fire stations in the coming months. These stations, like the Berlin-Mitte station, also have the necessary charging infrastructure to recharge the battery quickly and effectively. But is the Berlin eLHF truly a pure electric vehicle? The answer is quite clear: Yes! Both the vehicle, its equipment, and the pump are fully electric. If the battery is empty after 60 to 90 minutes, a diesel generator automatically kicks in, generating the power to seamlessly continue operating all functions. This is especially useful for larger operations or in the event of a disaster, where charging stations aren't available for extended periods. However, the battery is sufficient for normal operations at the fire station. The fact that the vehicle doesn't have a large diesel engine also brings other advantages. Not only is the emission-free driving a major plus, but another major advantage from an accident prevention perspective is that you no longer have to climb onto the vehicle. There's no equipment on the roof except for the ladders, which can be removed from the ground using ladder removal aids. Another crucial feature that's almost always present in conventional vehicles is the low-level equipment hatches. These are no longer present in the eLHF either, as the vehicle itself could already be built so low. The absence of the otherwise typical large diesel engine not only results in less noise in the crew cabin, but also more space. The cabin itself has been completely redesigned and now offers a kind of conference atmosphere. The crew no longer sits facing or against the direction of travel, but to the side and has direct visual and verbal contact with the group leader. The crew compartment also appears very well-organized and spacious. But has the vehicle proven itself in the first few months? Have the strengths of the Berlin eLHF been truly felt in operational service, or have disadvantages emerged that need to be addressed? The project, including trial operation of the Berlin eLHF, will run until January 31, 2022. After that, the entire project will be evaluated and assessed. The aim is to determine the advantages and disadvantages of the electric vehicle and whether CO2 emissions have actually been reduced. As was the case throughout the entire project period, we are working closely with Rosenbauer. And who knows, perhaps in five, 10, or 20 years, electric fire engines like the Berlin eLHF will be operating in all major German cities. What do you think: would the Farhezgu also be suitable for your fire department? Would it perform well in everyday operations?
