Their main characteristics include: Action on Beta-Adrenergic Receptors: Beta-blockers work by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in the body. This decreases the sympathetic nervous system's response, which normally responds to adrenaline and noradrenaline, resulting in effects such as reduced heart rate and blood pressure. Various Clinical Indications: They are prescribed for various conditions, including hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, migraines, anxiety, essential tremors, and glaucoma. Heart Rate Reduction: One of the primary effects of beta-blockers is a reduction in heart rate, which decreases the heart's workload and can be helpful in conditions such as angina and heart failure. Blood Pressure Reduction: In addition to decreasing heart rate, beta-blockers also reduce blood pressure, making them effective in treating hypertension. Heart Oxygen Consumption Reduction: Beta-blockers help decrease the heart's oxygen demand, which can be beneficial for patients with heart disease. Adverse Effects: Some common side effects include fatigue, dizziness, sleep disturbances, decreased heart rate, and sexual dysfunction. They can also mask the symptoms of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients. Classification: There are different generations of beta-blockers, and some are selective for beta-1 receptors, while others have non-selective action on both beta-1 and beta-2 receptors, which can lead to more side effects in certain situations. Importance of Gradual Discontinuation: Abruptly stopping beta-blockers can often result in rebound effects, such as increased heart rate and high blood pressure. Therefore, it is recommended to gradually reduce the dose under medical supervision. It is essential that beta-blockers be prescribed and monitored by a physician, taking into account the patient's clinical condition, as their use varies depending on the specific medical situation and individual characteristics of each individual.
