Oshima is known as the birthplace of "authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi," a silk weave silk that boasts a 1,300-year tradition, and as a cultural island where traditional events such as shimauta (traditional Okinawan folk songs) and hachigatsu odori (Japanese eight-month dance) still remain. Since low-cost carriers (LCCs) began operating in 2014, the number of tourists from the Tokyo metropolitan area has increased, and the number of cruise ship visitors has also increased.
