The No TAV protesters' accusation against the police is clear: "They fired tear gas at chest height." Two protesters suffered facial injuries from tear gas canisters. One of them is Yuri, 16, of Danish origin but raised in the Susa Valley. The young man was carried away from the clashes. Volunteer medics immediately declared the injury "very serious." The young man began vomiting, and medical personnel spoke of "possible neurological complications" if he wasn't immediately transported to the hospital. Police guarded the only access to the paved road that allowed access to the ambulances. Tensions flared, and several dozen riot police stood between Yuri and the medical assistance he needed. Only after a 45-minute wait did the commanding officer have the young man transported to the ambulance. The sixteen-year-old is now hospitalized at the CTO hospital in Turin, out of danger, and doctors have given him a 30-day prognosis. by Cosimo Carid
